A MUSEUM SITS FOR ITS PORTRAIT IN EXHIBIT AT PRINCE STREET GALLERY The painter’s dissection of color and light meets the architect’s concern for shape and place in the Prince Street Gallery’s new exhibit, Time and Shape: The Museum of Science and Industry, beginning February 26, 2008, in New York City. Artist Barbara Fitzpatrick spent the last two years painting and drawing the exterior of Chicago’s venerable Museum of Science and Industry, the only surviving building of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. “The Museum is an outstanding subject, whether you think of my paintings as still lives, landscapes or portraits,” said Fitzpatrick. “My paintings try to get inside what we really see when we look at everyday objects,” Fitzpatick continued. “The Museum is a wonderful example of the Classical Revival styles. I have looked at the Museum for two years now, in brightly-lit summer days and in winter darkness, and in early morning light and the glare of mid-day. The paintings in the Prince Street exhibit give my viewers a chance to see through my eyes the effects of light on the limestone arcades, colonnades, and porticos of the building, and to think about scale and the meaning of architectural elements over the course of time.” The drawings in the exhibit are both studies for paintings, and free-standing studies of the volumes and shapes that make up the structure. Trained as an architect as well as an artist, Fitzpatrick uses her drawings to unpack views of a public building that visitors see every day. Fitzpatrick has previously created series on construction sites (shown in New York in 2003 and in Chicago in 2003) and hand tools (exhibited in New York in 2005 and in Chicago in 2006). for more information: www.barbarafitzpatrick.com
