Artist Statement
My love of wandering has drawn me to such places in Africa, as Mali and recently Nigeria. Of particular interest to me are the weavings and decorated textiles created by native people.
This series of large oil paintings titled "Beyond the Fabric" brings together veiled womanly images beneath a layer of African fabric designs. A sense of what is both hidden and revealed results, suggesting the flow between what is easily seen and what is beyond.
Born in Brooklyn, I studied drawing at the Brooklyn Museum and graduated from Cooper Union with a major in fine arts. After earning a graduate degree in non-western art history from CCNY, I have been teaching African and Native American art history at Suny Purchase.
